FLUID THERAPY IN ELDERLY PATIENT

Abstract
The increasing number of elderly patient and the fact that preoperative deviations of fluid and electrolytes is the cause of the highest mortality following surgery has led to recognize need of more knowledge relating to senescent alteration of fluid and electrolyte metabolism.
Aging is a degenerative conditions of all organs and there are many anatomic and physiological changes. The principal changes are diminution of cardiopulmonary and renal functions, and decrement of body fluid and exchangeable electrolytes resulting from decreasing body cell mass and increasing fat amount during senescence.
Not only changes of aging but coexisting various diseases of mainly cardiopulmonary origin are also dangerous conditions.
The requirement and disorders of fluid and electrolytes in elderly patients has been reviewed and the conclusion is made as that important variables, compared with the care of younger individuals, are quantitative rather than qualitative.
